Dr. Sharry Kimmel is a distinguished educator and community leader whose career spans over three decades, marked by a commitment to innovative teaching and public service.

A graduate of the University of Florida with a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science, a Master’s Degree in Secondary Education from the University of Miami, and a Doctorate Degree in Child, Youth, and Family Studies from Nova Southeastern University. Dr. Kimmel has deep roots in Florida’s educational landscape. Her teaching career began in Dade County before she moved to Broward, where she was named Broward County Teacher of the year in 1996 for her work with gifted students at Pembroke Lakes Elementary. Her classroom, known as the “Discovery Crew,” was celebrated for its creativity, including immersive projects like a “live” chess game and a giant bubble for reading activities.

Transitioning from the classroom to administration and higher education, Dr. Kimmel served as the founding Assistant Principal of the Sagemont School, where she helped design the institution from the ground up. She later directed grants and programs for the South Florida Annenberg Challenge, managing a $100 million matching grant program. For the past 22 years, she has served as a Professor of Teacher Education at Broward College, where she has been awarded two Endowed Teaching Chairs and founded the first-ever community college chapter of the prestigious Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education, opening the door for chapters at community colleges nationwide. She also currently serves as a Faculty Senator.

Beyond her professional achievements, Dr. Kimmel is a leader in the Northwest Broward community, where she has lived since 2019. She currently serves as the President of the Parkland Friends of the Library and is a long-standing member of the City of Parkland Community Advisory Board. Her leadership extends to her local neighborhood, where she served as the first HOA President of the Cascata community. Her community work is characterized by a “relentless” drive to unite residents, often spearheading initiatives like city-wide partnerships with the Harvest Drive to support families in need during the pandemic.

Dr. Kimmel has been married for nearly 35 years and is the proud mother of two adult sons, Daniel and Jonathan, both of whom overcame unique medical and learning challenges to achieve success in their respective fields of software engineering and film.

Dr. Kimmel's Priorities

Fiscal Responsibility

Strong financial oversight is essential for restoring trust with parents and taxpayers. Broward County Public Schools must eliminate waste and mismanagement, ensuring that every dollar is spent transparently and effectively. We must prioritize investments in classrooms and facilities. Smart budgeting should focus on improving student outcomes and maintaining our schools, not administrative excess.

Student Safety

Student safety must be addressed through a layered, evidence-based approach that emphasizes prevention, rapid response, and real protection. This includes trained School Resource Officers on campus, strong threat assessment protocols, improved classroom security, and better safety training for educators. The district must also invest in smart technology such as AI-based threat detection systems, panic buttons, and emergency response tools that can save critical minutes during a crisis.

Smart & Transparent “Redefining” of our Schools

As enrollment declines, the district is considering school closures, mergers, and changes in how school properties are used. These decisions must be made through a transparent, community-driven process that protects neighborhood access to public education and prioritizes student achievement. Oversight and accountability are essential to prevent mismanagement and ensure these changes serve students and families—not private interests.

Investing In Our Classroom Teachers

Attracting and retaining great educators requires competitive pay and meaningful support. With rising costs of living, Broward teachers and support staff need compensation that reflects their value and keeps pace with the realities they face. Investing in educators through fair pay, professional development, and strong workplace support strengthens our schools and directly benefits students.
